The world's largest solar car race has kicked off in Australia.

Thirty-eight teams from 19 countries and territories are taking part in the World Solar Challenge that began on Sunday.

In the biennial race, each team drives a solar-powered car on a 3,000-kilometer course from the northern city of Darwin to Adelaide in the south.

Fans and local residents cheered the teams as they lined up at the start line in central Darwin. The order had been decided at a time trial on Saturday.

A Belgian team, Punch Powertrain, set off first, followed by a Japanese team from the Nagoya Institute of Technology.

Another Japanese team from Tokai University is aiming for its first victory since 2011. It started in 13th position.

The cars only run from 8 AM to 5 PM. They have a maximum speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour.

The winning team is expected to cross the finish line as early as Thursday.
