US may seek 50% US content rule in NAFTA talks

From NHK

US media say the administration of President Donald Trump plans to propose significant changes to the rule of origin for automobiles in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.

The proposal introduces a requirement that autos have at least 50 percent US-made content to qualify for tariff breaks.

The 4th round of talks between the US, Mexico and Canada is due to begin on Wednesday in a Washington suburb.

Mexico and Canada are expected to react sharply. US firms are also likely to object to the measure, which they say would increase costs and reduce competitiveness.

Japanese auto-related companies in Mexico may have to reconsider their procurement channels.

Tightening the rules of origin is one topic in the NAFTA renegotiations. There are currently no tariffs levied on manufactured goods containing a certain proportion of parts produced in the 3 member countries.

US media reports say the Trump administration is proposing the new rule to create jobs in the auto sector.
