INTERVIEW: Edano Aims to End Abe Administration

(Jiji Press)

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan will do all it can to end the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by working with other opposition parties in the Oct. 22 general election, party head Yukio Edano said in a recent interview with Jiji Press.
In cooperation with the Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party, the new party, formed by liberal members of the major opposition Democratic Party in line with its split, will field as many unified candidates as possible in single-seat constituencies in the upcoming House of Representatives election, Edano suggested. Such cooperation among opposition parties was also seen in the House of Councillors election in July last year.
"We'll never lend a hand to help the Abe administration continue" in the event that the ruling bloc of Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, Komeito, lose a majority in the Lower House, Edano said.
"We'll never vote for an LDP candidate in the parliamentary vote to pick the prime minister" after the general election, Edano also said.
Asked why the party was created, he said there is a need for a political force that emphasizes bottom-up-based approaches on social and economic issues to tackle poverty and correct disparities, as well as to revitalize the economy by boosting consumption.
